Preparing for a German assessment centre as a trainee applicant

Small group discussion during an assessment-style workshop

German trainee assessment centres usually combine a case discussion, a short presentation, and one-to-one interviews. Some add online tests before the day. The goal is not theatrical leadership; it is clear thinking under time pressure and fair collaboration.

In group exercises, name the problem, invite quieter voices, and summarise decisions. Assessors notice candidates who monopolise the floor as much as those who stay silent. Practise with a timer and a peer who will interrupt you — that mirrors the real room better than reading notes alone.

For presentations, structure beats polish: situation, options, recommendation, risks. Keep slides sparse if slides are allowed. Bring one example from a previous internship or student project that shows how you handled conflicting priorities.

After the day, write down the questions you struggled with. Those notes become the agenda for your next coaching session.
